yeah, but gays can sit on buses, gays can go to our schools. i just don't think we need a government intervention on this issue. i mean, i guess it comes down to a matter of opinion as to when an intervention would be appropriate. i personally think people can handle this issue on their own. i just don't like the idea of the people speaking and the government ignoring what they have to say, when in reality the government is there to serve the people not stiffle them

But the issue still remains, with all the benefits that come with legal marriage, is it O.K. to prevent gay people from getting those benefits? Sure, Civil Unions allow for some, but not all.

lol, of course gay marriage will cause a big debate, it's one of the biggest social issues of our time. i think it's unfair that civil unions don't offer the same benifits as your ttaditional marriage. i think someday they will have equal rights, i could see it happening in the next decade or so.
First of all the reason Prop. 8 was overturned by the popular vote is because the money that went into the smear campaign made the funding in Vote No look like pocket change. Also, have you seen any of the 'Yes on 8' ads? They boast completely fictitious and preposterous scenarios that make gay couples look like the farthest thing from holy or good possible. I'd be ashamed of myself, were I involved in that campaign. Furthermore, polls were conducted following Nov. 4 that indicate that a lot of the voters were confused or misled when they voted for Prop. 8.
FURTHERMORE, democracy is about the people making decisions for the people. A bunch of stuck up aristocrats making decisions for the gay community is NOT democracy. That's like voting in a foreign country's election, although some of the time that country's election might actually affect you. Proposition 8 truly doesn't affect anyone but the gay community. I don't care what religious zealots or people worried about the purported 'family' say, it does NOT affect them. Their rights will not be changed. They might be irked to see a ring on a man hand's as he holds another man's but that is by no means a legitimate reason to obstruct the path to equality in our country.
"yeah, but gays can sit on buses, gays can go to our schools"
But gays cannot get married statewide, and that is the government telling them "Your feelings are invalid and we will not recognize them the same way that we do straight couples'."
If you've got some sort of scripture obligation or classic-nuclear-family-with-a-white-picket-fence image that forces you to dismantle these peoples' prospect of a happy marriage, okay, you do that.
But please...do not pretend like this will actively affect or ruin the quality of your life.
